Fall in Love with These 10 Flowers for Your Autumn Garden This Season
Fall might be known for falling leaves and pumpkin spice, but your garden doesn’t have to fade away with summer. There are plenty of flowers that thrive in the cooler temperatures and give your space that perfect pop of color. Even if you don’t have a “green thumb”, these flowers can make you feel good about your garden! Check out these fall flowers that can keep your home looking fabulous all season long.
Autumn Sunflowers
Sunflowers in fall? Absolutely! There are some special autumn varieties that bloom later in the season, and they come in rich colors like burgundy, deep orange, and even rusty red. They are a bold and gorgeous way to bring some extra warmth to your fall garden.
Mums (Chrysanthemums)
Mums are the unofficial flowers of fall and they are everywhere! You can get them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Pike Nursery, Kroger, or your local nursery. These beauties come in almost every color you can think of—orange, yellow, red, pink, purple—you name it. They're tough little plants that can handle the chilly weather, so they'll keep your garden looking fresh well into autumn.
Asters
Asters are like the grand finale of summer flowers, bursting onto the scene with their bright blue, purple, and pink blooms. They’re not only pretty but also attract bees and butterflies, which is great if you want to give a little extra love to your local pollinators.
Sedum
If you want something that's practically foolproof, go for sedum. Also, known as the “stonecrop”, this plant is super hardy and has cool, fleshy leaves that look great all year. In the fall, it produces clusters of star-shaped flowers in deep reds and pinks that add a pop of color to your garden beds.
Japanese Anemones
These delicate, fluttery flowers are perfect for adding some elegance to your fall garden. Japanese anemones come in soft shades of pink and white, and they’re surprisingly tough for something so pretty. Plus, they bloom late into fall, so you'll have something pretty to look at for weeks.
Helenium
Helenium is all about bold color! It's also known as a funny name too- "sneezeweed"! This daisy-like flower blooms in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows that practically scream "fall." It's perfect for adding a splash of fiery color to your garden, and it’s a magnet for butterflies.
Goldenrod
Goldenrod might not be the first flower you think of for your garden, but it’s totally underrated. Its bright yellow flowers look like little puffs of sunshine and bring a cheerful vibe to any space. Plus, it’s super easy to grow and fills out your garden nicely as other plants start to fade away.
Pansies
Pansies are small but mighty! These little guys are tough and can handle cooler temps, making them a perfect pick for fall. Plus, they come in so many fun colors—blues, purples, yellows, reds—so you can mix and match for a playful garden look.
Marigolds
Marigolds are like the definition of fall with their bright orange and yellow blooms. They're easy to grow and will hang around even as the weather cools off. Did you know that their strong scent helps keep garden pests at bay? So, they do double duty as beautiful and functional!
Calendula
Calendula has bright orange or yellow blooms that love the cooler weather of fall, and it's super low maintenance. On top of that, calendula is known for its healing properties, so it’s a flower that looks good and does good!
Fall gardening doesn’t have to be all about mums and pumpkins (though we love those too!). From toad lilies to saffron crocuses, there are so many unique flowers that thrive in cooler temps and keep your garden bursting with color. These plants will keep your garden looking fresh, fun, and full of life even as sweater weather rolls in.
Happy Planting!
