Make Your Thanksgiving Memorable: Traditions to Try This Year

Thanksgiving is all about family, friends, and a whole lot of good food. But what makes this holiday really special are the little traditions that bring everyone together—and maybe even give you a few belly laughs before dessert! Whether you’re looking to shake things up or add some heartfelt moments to your day, these creative ideas will help your Thanksgiving feel even more meaningful (and memorable).

Start a Gratitude Journal

Why let gratitude slip away with the gravy? Grab a blank journal, pass it around the table, and ask everyone to jot down one thing they’re thankful for this year. Little ones who can’t write? No problem—have an adult step in as their scribe. Year after year, the journal becomes a treasured time capsule of love, growth, and funny misspelled entries. You will appreciate the growth and it may be bring a tear to your eye!

Volunteer Before the Big Feast

Giving back is the ultimate feel-good tradition. Rally the family and friends to volunteer at a local food bank, participate in a food drive, or run a Turkey Trot for charity. It's a great way to remind everyone that Thanksgiving is as much about kindness as it is about stuffing. Plus, you will want to continue the spirit through the end of the year.

Kick Off the Holiday Season in Comfort

Who says Christmas pajamas are just for December? Get everyone in the festive spirit with matching PJs on Thanksgiving night. Bonus points if you top it off with a family dance party in the living room—your kids will thank you! Snap a few pictures while you are at it! These are the memories you cannot get back.

Storytelling Through Your Table Decor

Forget Pinterest-perfect tablescapes—make your table a celebration of your family’s history. Break out mismatched dishes, heirloom platters, and even that chipped plate from Grandma’s house. Share the stories behind each piece as you sit down to eat. For the finishing touch, have the kids create homemade place cards with pinecones, leaves, or whatever they can find outside. This will be something they will remember that they can carry down the line in their own family's celebrations one day.

Prepare a Special Comfort Breakfast alongside that Traditional Meal

Sure, dinner steals the spotlight on Thanksgiving, but why not start the day with a yummy breakfast? Whip up pancakes, French toast, or a cozy breakfast casserole and gather the family around the table. It’s a calm way to set the tone before the chaos of cooking begins. Plus, you will avoid having a bunch of hangry people in your house!

Take a Walk in the Morning

Before the turkey coma hits, head outside for a family walk. Whether it’s through a neighborhood park or just around the block, the fresh air and rosy cheeks will do wonders—and help everyone build an appetite for the feast ahead. Also, it is a great way to reflect on everything you should be thankful for!

Give the Kiddos a Special Job

Let the kids shine by giving them a special job they can own each year, like setting the table, basting the turkey, or serving dessert. It’s a small way to make them feel important—and creates sweet memories for everyone. (Hint: Compliment their “perfectly” folded napkins, even if they look more like abstract art.) Haha!

Open Your Table

Thanksgiving is all about inclusion. Invite a neighbor, coworker, or friend who might not have a place to celebrate. If they can’t join you, pack up a plate and leave it at their doorstep (no awkward charity vibes—just kindness on a plate). Plus, you can avoid  conversations with any awkward family members by introducing a new guest!

Make It Unique to You

Traditions don’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. The most important thing? Creating moments that bring your family closer together. So, grab a fork, clink the glass,  share some laughs, and start a tradition you’ll look forward to every year.

What’s your favorite Thanksgiving tradition? Did anything spark a new idea?
