Must-Do Home Maintenance Tips in October

Fake Fall is on its way out- Finally! Now is the time to prepare your home for the upcoming cold months. Tackling these maintenance tasks in October will help you avoid costly repairs, improve energy efficiency, and keep your home comfortable and safe throughout the winter.

Run a Test on Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
As you begin using your heating system more, it’s crucial to ensure your home’s safety devices are working. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace batteries, and ensure you have detectors installed near bedrooms, in hallways, and on each level of your home.

Make sure you Service your Furnace
Schedule a professional inspection to check your furnace, boiler, or heat pump for any issues. Replacing furnace filters monthly will improve airflow and keep your system running efficiently. Regular maintenance will also extend the life of your heating system and prevent breakdowns during peak cold periods.

Clean & Maintain your Gutters
Fallen leaves and debris can quickly clog gutters, leading to water overflow that damages your roof, siding, or foundation. Clean out gutters and downspouts, and make sure they direct water at least 5-10 feet away from the house to prevent water damage to your foundation and basement.

Replace Seals on Drafty Windows and Doors
Cold drafts through gaps in windows and doors can significantly increase heating costs. Inspect weatherstripping around doors for cracks or wear, and replace it if necessary. Use caulk to seal gaps around window frames. For older windows, consider using plastic insulation kits to add a layer of protection.

Get your Roof inspected
Check your roof for signs of damage, such as missing, cracked, or curling shingles. Damaged shingles can lead to leaks and expensive repairs during winter storms. Also, inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights, which are common sources of leaks.

Clean up your Fireplace and Chimney
Before using your fireplace, have it professionally cleaned to remove creosote buildup, which can cause chimney fires. Check the chimney cap to ensure it's secure and free of blockages. Also, remove any soot from last year.

Winterize Outdoor Faucets
Water left in outdoor pipes can freeze and cause pipes to burst. Disconnect garden hoses, drain water from outdoor faucets, and turn off the water supply to exterior spigots. Install foam faucet covers to provide extra protection against freezing temperatures.

Rake up Leaves
Letting leaves accumulate on your lawn can smother the grass, leading to dead patches by spring. Rake leaves regularly or mulch them with your mower to turn them into a nutrient-rich layer for your garden beds, helping to protect plants during the colder months.

Inspect Exterior Paint and Siding
Examine the exterior of your home for peeling paint, cracks, or holes in the siding. Moisture can seep into these areas, causing long-term damage to wood and other materials. Touch up any worn paint and repair or replace damaged siding to keep your home well-sealed against the elements.

These proactive steps will protect your home from winter’s harsh conditions, enhance energy efficiency, and ensure a safer, more comfortable living space for the season ahead. Plus, it can save you a lot of money down the road.
