Jasper, a budding North Georgia town, was originally named for William Jasper, a fallen soldier of the revolutionary war. In 1857, Jasper was chosen as Pickens’ county seat due to its centermost location in the heart of the county. After the war and the coming of the railroad, the area’s economy heavily rested on the marble and cotton industries for many years. The area’s marbled past is still evident all around, especially at the Tate House, a gorgeous, solid marble estate-turned-venue just 5 minutes from Jasper. Now, this once tiny town relies on logging among other modern enterprises as it navigates its burgeoning future.
Currently, Jasper has begun to see increased growth thanks to Metro Atlanta’s rapid expansion in recent years. Though it has previously lagged behind in comparison to surrounding North Georgia towns, its potential has been kicked into high gear. Because of its more northerly location (20 miles north of Canton & 60 miles north of Atlanta), this bucolic town offers rolling views of the Appalachian Mountains. In fact, the current Appalachian Trail terminus is located only a short drive away at Springer Mountain in nearby Fannin County. Jasper’s proximity to everyone’s favorite getaways is incomparable; Amicalola Falls State Park, Big Canoe, Fall Creek Falls, Blue Ridge, and Talking Rock are only a few of the neighboring getaway spots. Jasper is full of and surrounded by natural beauty. Between parks, rivers, camping spots, hiking trails, and vineyards, this town has incredible access to the great outdoors year-round.
But Jasper isn’t JUST a gateway to surrounding treasures. Downtown Jasper has all the small-town assets you could ask for: college, hospital, medical centers, grocery stores, and franchises. Essentials aside, Jasper hosts a good deal of mom-and-pop restaurants and shops favorited by locals. All the features of a quaint North Georgia town are at your fingertips here. While Jasper is often seen as a bedroom community for Atlanta commuters, you’ll find it’s not without its own job opportunities and may even appeal to remote workers who want to live, work, or raise a family from this beautiful locale.
