Maria's Favorite Spots in Ellijay & Blue Ridge: Our Local Guide to Eating, Shopping, and Exploring the North Georgia Mountains
If there's one thing I love about living in North Georgia, it's how close we are to the mountains.
A little over an hour from Canton and you're in a completely different world — apple orchards, river trails, downtown streets lined with locally owned shops, and restaurants that actually make you want to linger. My family has spent a lot of weekends in Ellijay and Blue Ridge over the years, and people ask me constantly where to go.
So here it is. All in one place.
Whether you're planning a long weekend, spending a week in a cabin, or starting to think about whether mountain life might be calling your name — these are the spots I genuinely love and keep going back to.
Ellijay, Georgia
Ellijay is one of those towns that earns its reputation. Known as the Apple Capital of Georgia, it has the kind of small-town charm that doesn't feel manufactured — it just is. The downtown square is walkable, the food is good, and the surrounding mountain scenery makes it hard to leave.
Where to Eat
Cantaberry Restaurant
This is my go-to for lunch in Ellijay, and it has been for years. Cantaberry sits right on the downtown square at 5 Southside Square, and everything on the menu feels homemade — because most of it is. Soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts worth saving room for. If you're wandering downtown and need to stop somewhere, this is the one.
Col. Poole's Bar-B-Q
Col. Poole's started as a roadside BBQ stand, and it has become a full-on mountain institution. The Pig Hill behind the restaurant is worth the visit by itself — it's one of those only-in-Georgia things. The brisket and pulled pork are exactly what they should be, and the homemade sides don't disappoint. You'll find them at 164 Craig Street in East Ellijay.
Charlie's Italian Restaurant
A longtime local favorite for pizza, pasta, and Italian comfort food done right. It's the kind of place that works for a casual lunch or a family dinner after a long day of hiking. Relaxed, reliable, and always good.
Coffee and Treats
Mountain Town Coffee is my downtown stop — a cozy little spot that's perfect for slowing down with a good cup before you dive into the day.
Other local favorites worth knowing:
- The Sharp Sickle- a dedicated gluten-free coffeehouse
- Raspados Celeste- popular dessert shop known for authentic Mexican shaved ice and other frozen treats.
Shopping
One of the best things about Ellijay is honestly just strolling downtown. You don't need a plan — you'll find something.
KL Boutique is my favorite stop for women's clothing, gifts, and accessories. A few other spots worth browsing:
- Mountain Treasures
- The Blue Ridge Olive Oil Company
- Back Porch Marketplace
Family Fun & Outdoor Adventures
River Tubing — A summer staple. Floating down the river on a warm afternoon is one of those simple mountain experiences that never gets old.
Apple Houses — You cannot leave Ellijay without stopping at one of the famous apple houses. My personal recommendation is Panorama Orchards & Farm Market. Grab one of their fried pies and tell them Mama sent you.
Hiking Near Ellijay
A few family-friendly favorites we keep coming back to:
- Amicalola Falls State Park
- Cartecay River Loop
- Bear Creek Trail
- Fort Mountain State Park
Blue Ridge, Georgia
If I'm being honest, Blue Ridge might be my favorite mountain town in Georgia. Between the restaurants, the shopping, the scenery, and the family activities — there's something for everyone, and it manages to feel both lively and laid-back at the same time.
Breakfast
The Yellowphant Café is a local favorite, and for good reason. Great coffee, fresh ingredients, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer than planned.
Mountain Mama's Coffee Lounge is where I like to start the morning before wandering downtown. The kind of place you settle into.
Lunch & Dinner
Harvest on Main — Farm-to-table dining right in the heart of downtown Blue Ridge. Fresh, thoughtful, and always worth it.
Chester Brunnenmeyer's — A solid choice for lunch or dinner, with enough variety that everyone at the table finds something they love.
Southern Charm — If you're craving classic Southern comfort food, this is your spot. Relaxed, family-friendly, and exactly what it sounds like.
Special Occasion Dinners
The General Ledger — Located inside the historic courthouse, this is one of the most unique dining experiences in Blue Ridge. The setting alone makes it memorable.
Black Sheep Restaurant — A longtime local favorite with great food, a beautiful atmosphere, and the kind of consistency that keeps people coming back.
Grace Prime — This is my pick when we're celebrating something. It's a splurge, and it's worth it. Don't go here in a hurry.
Coffee & Bakeries & Treats
- Mountain Mama's Coffee Lounge
- Das Kaffee Haus
- Mellie's Café
- Mercier Orchards Bakery (don't skip this one — the bakery alone is worth the stop)
- Blue Ridge Creamery - truly the best ice cream made with real ingredients
Shopping
Neighborly Boutique is my personal go-to when I'm downtown and want to browse. Always something worth finding.
Huck's General Store is Lane's favorite stop every single time. Candy, toys, old-fashioned treats, and all kinds of things you didn't know you needed. It's genuinely fun.
A few more worth exploring:
- Blue Ridge Adventure Wear
- Out of the Blue
- Multitudes Gallery
Family Adventures
Blue Ridge Scenic Railway — Probably the most iconic attraction in Blue Ridge, and for good reason. If it's your first trip to town, this is a must.
Ziplining:
- Blue Ridge Adventure Park
- Zipline Canopy Tours of Blue Ridge
Tubing:
- Rolling Thunder River Company
- Toccoa Wilderness Tubing
Hiking Near Blue Ridge
Long Creek Falls — One of the most beautiful waterfall hikes in all of North Georgia. Do this one.
Fall Branch Falls — A relatively easy trail that's perfect for families with younger kids.
Benton MacKaye Trail — Incredible mountain views and plenty of room to explore at your own pace.
Aska Trails — Great for hiking, mountain biking, or just spending a few hours outside. One of my favorites.
One Last Thing
Don't overplan.
Some of our best mountain memories happened because we put our phones away and just wandered. We parked the car, found a coffee shop we'd never been to, stumbled into a store we didn't know existed, and spent an afternoon that we still talk about.
That's the thing about Ellijay and Blue Ridge. The best parts aren't usually on a list.
